The QNX CAR Platform for Infotainment is based on QNX® technology deployed in millions of cars. It supports an exceptionally rich set of pre-integrated technologies, both from QNX Software Systems and dozens of ecosystem partners, to help automotive companies reduce the time required to build connected infotainment systems.
I took on the design of the digital instrument cluster for the QNX Jeep; the reference vehicle that showcases the CAR Platform. It was very important to honor the heritage and values of the Jeep brand, while ensuring the design was both intelligent and modern. The screen is an incredible canvas for something like an instrument cluster. Static analog gauges were replaced by smart speedometers and odometers that can switch units based on location (km/h in Canada or MPH in the USA) or user preference. Areas of the cluster formerly dedicated to cut-outs of seldom seen symbols and indicators now display dynamic information, such as currently playing media, ambient external temperature, weather information, rear-view cameras or turn-by-turn information. Of course, 2 different skins were provided for optimal legibility during any time of day. A level of restraint is required when designing for automotive and avoiding driver distraction is paramount. It was also very important to consider the power of the hardware. All assets were optimized to ensure bitmap data was kept to a minimum.
